Death Cab for Cutie | Hordern Pavilion

Death Cab for Cutie is set to bring the indie rock legends to Australia this November, with the band showcasing all their hits alongside material from their new album, I Built You A Tower.

The band will perform at Hordern Pavilion, Entertainment Quarter Sydney, on Thursday 12 November 2026. Doors open at 7:00pm, with the show starting at 8:00pm. Acopia will support.

With three decades and 10 acclaimed studio albums behind them, Death Cab for Cutie remain revered for their distinctive sound and are as in demand and influential as ever.

Death Cab for Cutie Sydney: a new chapter

Death Cab for Cutie’s 11th studio album, I Built You A Tower, marks a return to the band’s independent roots.

Produced and engineered by John Congleton, the album was assembled from just three weeks of sessions and recorded at Animal Rites in Los Angeles, as well as in the band members’ homes in Seattle, Bellingham, Los Angeles and Portland.

The album’s first single, “Riptides”, became the band’s ninth #1 at Adult Alternative radio.

I Built You A Tower is an album about reconciling with past selves in order to locate a new future. The record grew out of a period that followed several significant milestones for the band, including massive sold-out tours celebrating the 20th anniversaries of Transatlanticism and Plans.

Those anniversary tours also helped shape the creation of the new album. Behind the scenes, Ben Gibbard was navigating the pressures of fronting both Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service on arena stages while dealing with the collapse of his personal life.

The “tower” became a way to protect himself and create a place to hold loss and grief while moving forward.

Three decades of Death Cab for Cutie

The new record reflects a return to an early ethos that has been part of Death Cab for Cutie’s 30-year history. Rather than simply looking backwards, I Built You A Tower captures the band’s desire to take the feeling and energy of their anniversary tours and turn it into something new.

Dave Depper describes the anniversary tours as exorcising nostalgia from the band’s systems, while the studio sessions provided an opportunity to reconnect with the confidence and creative freedom of the earliest versions of the group.
